Advent is a season when we wait for Jesus, when we wait to behold the face of God born to us at Christmas. But the truth is, God is already here. We live in the “in-between” where the Spirit of God is already moving as we wait for Jesus to come and fulfil God’s promises. Sometimes, though, it can be hard to see God at work. We face our own everyday challenges and reckon with troubles in the world that just seem too big. Where is God in all this?
This Advent, walk with Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, the shepherds, and the magi as they – and we – learn to notice God now. This series invites you to behold, to pay attention to the ways God is showing up in your life and to respond with the kind of faith, courage, and hope that shine light in the darkness.
Week 1: Behold: Hope amid Fear | Matthew 1:18-23
In the face of difficult, even desperate situations, watch for signs of God’s hope.
Week 2: Behold: God at Work | Luke 1:26-37
God is at work in our lives, even when we don’t understand it. Pay attention to what God is already doing in you!
Week 3: Behold: Here I Am! | Luke 1:38-40, Matthew 1:24-25
God shows up in our lives with an invitation to respond and participate in what God is doing.
Week 4: Behold: God in Me | Luke 1:46-55
When we embrace God’s work in us, our lives become a magnifying glass – helping the world to see more clearly a God of love, power, and liberation.
Christmas Eve: Behold: A Child Born unto You, unto All | Luke 2:1-20
In Jesus, we look upon the face of God. This is good news of great joy – both to receive and to share!
Week 5 or Epiphany: Behold, Follow, Behold Again | Matthew 2:1-12
To see and follow Jesus is not a linear process. It requires us to stay attentive to God’s ongoing direction and be willing to change course when we must.
